BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Here we are in the month of October. Not only are we getting ready for ghost and goblins, we are celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness month.

I'm sure everyone has been affect my breast cancer. Whether friend, family member or just a friend of a friend, we all have been touched. It is such a horrible disease to deal with, but I'm so glad that there is a special month to honor breast cancer survivors and whose who have lost their lives.

The NBCAM (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month) is an annual health campaign to bring awareness to the disease and fund research for finding a cure. The NBCAM was founded in 1985 between the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries, now a part of AstraZeneca, which is the maker of several anti-breast cancer drug.

In 1993, the pink ribbon symbol was established as the symbol for breast cancer, tho the first ribbon was used by the Susan G, Komen Foundation that handed out the pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors.

The first Race for the Cure in Dallas, Texas had 800 participants. Now, organizers say, by 2002 the number reached 1.3 million and the event was held in over 100 US cities.

It is amazing to me, all the support there is out there for breast cancer. No one has to deal with it alone. I encourage all to get regular mammograms and do self-exams. Early detection is the key to living a long healthy life.
